Lottery Sellers in New Zealand have competition from a different source now and that is the internet. This move by New Zealand Lotteries is a path breaker in a sense but is bound to cause a lot of heart burn for the retailers.
The latest move is a culmination of a series of measures taken by the New Zealand Government, which started with the exclusion of TAB and NZ lotteries from an online gambling ban. The move was then seen as a measure to let people spend their money on online gambling in the country and not outside it. While buyers are welcoming the move, as more and more people are becoming internet dependant, it is not being welcomed in open arms by the retailers. As one retailer in Wellington said, that with the spread of the internet no person would wait in a line to buy lottery tickets. hile the move to take sale of lottery tickets online would take a few more weeks, it may eventually see the end of lottery ticket retailers.
