South Africa is on its way to becoming the latest country which will now make online gambling legal. At The moment, Online Gambling is illegal in the country and the players who indulge in it are unprotected. To correct this anomaly, a bill that will allow online gambling has been referred to the Committee of National Provinces. This bill will then be sent to the national assembly for its final nod.
According to Themba Marasha, who is the Chief operating officer of the South African National Gambling Board, the bill will allow online gambling and protect South Africans who want to gamble on the net. According to Marasha, once the bill is passed, online gambling companies could apply for licenses. However he added a warning to companies that wanted to apply for licenses, stating that if they had broken the law even once, it would disqualify them from applying for a new license.
South Africans can bet online on sports events happening within the country, but online gambling was banned in 2004 by the National Gambling Act. The new law proposes that both players and companies will need licenses to gamble online. At the moment casinos are a major source of revenue to the South African government.
