Nevada Gambling Revenue Declines

2009 was a disappointing year in America’s land-based gambling industry. The global recession encouraged an increasing number of people to seek out entertainment in their own homes rather than going out for leisure activities. Rather than going out to bars, movies and casinos, people were staying home, taking a great deal of revenue away from these venues. One of the biggest hits taken was by Nevada, in which the world’s biggest gambling capital resides.

In 2010, the state’s gambling revenue was a 3.2% decline from January 2009 when $912 million was collected. This year was expected to be a profitable one, as Las Vegas’ CityCentre has just been completed, a project that was predicted to draw in a large population of tourists and conventions. Unfortunately, that was not the case, and Las Vegas continues to suffer in 2010 from dwindling tourist numbers and decreased gambling revenues. Other American gambling capitals are also suffering. Take Atlantic City, for example, in which many casinos are considering filing for bankruptcy.

However, casino operators in the state remain optimistic. With the World Series of Poker coming to town over the summer, Las Vegas is expected to see an influx of tourists who are ready to spend their money on gambling.

Online casinos, on the other hand, continue to experience impressive results. They are profiting from the decline in land-based casinos, as avid gamblers turn their attention to the home-based activity of gambling online.
